The GIANTS have gone down by 16-points in an AFLW practice match against Brisbane on Saturday.
Greasy and wet conditions made scoring difficult at Griffin Park in Coorparoo, Brisbane as the Lions ran out winners 3.10 (28) to the GIANTS 2.0 (12).
18-year-old forward Kate Stanton was one of the GIANTS’ standout players, kicking two last quarter goals to keep her side in the game.
Selected with pick 33 of the NAB AFL Women’s Draft, the Wollongong Saints’ product was calm under pressure, kicking her first goal with a classy snap from 30 meters out and her second from a composed set shot.
Defender Clare Lawton was impressive in restricting Lions key-forward Sabrina Frederick-Traub to one goal, while Alex Saundry kept Jess Wuetschner quiet until the Brisbane forward kicked a late goal.
A strong crowd was on hand to watch the match, despite persistent rain throughout the game.
The GIANTS’ now have a weekend off before the AFLW season commences with their round one clash against Adelaide at Thebarton Oval on Saturday February 4.
