THE GAME IS CHANGING ON 18 FEBRUARY 2017, A NEW ERA OF NETBALL BEGINS. PREPARE TO WITNESS THE RISE OF NEW TEAMS, STATE V STATE RIVALRIES AND HOME TOWN CITY DERBIES. Find Out How Suncorp Super Netball Was Born:
May 2016: The Game Is Changing. On 19 May 2016, Netball Australia announced that it would part ways with Netball New Zealand. In leaving behind the ANZ Championship, a new journey was embarked upon; one that would become Suncorp Super Netball.
The Nine Network and Telstra were announced as broadcast partners with two games now set to be televised live each week on the Nine Network, and the remaining two games live through Telstra TV.
Competitors Rise. Giants Netball, Magpies Netball Club and the Sunshine Coast Lightning were announced as the three new teams joining the five existing Australian teams – the Adelaide Thunderbirds, Melbourne Vixens, NSW Swifts, Queensland Firebirds and West Coast Fever – in a new national netball league.
September 2016: Players Become Athletes. The landmark agreement that will see 80 athletes contracted to the league, sharing in a total player payment pool of $5.4 million, was announced on 14 September. Each club would have up to $675,000 to spend on its list of 10 contracted athletes, with the average salary increased to $67,500.
New Rivalries Are Born. Player contracts could now be signed, seeing a new breed of teams set to enter Suncorp Super Netball. New rivalries were quickly formed, as a flurry of movement ensured former teammates would now face off in 2017.
October 2016: League Rises. Suncorp was announced as the principal partner of Netball Australia, a deal which would extend for five years and would see them become the naming rights partner of the new league.
November 2016: The Game Is Changing. Suncorp Super Netball was born, in a name that would represent a new and contemporary league, one that will reflect what the competition will bring.
Everything will be on the line when the Suncorp Super Netball begins – 18 February 2017.
